Roulette: Simple, Multiple Chances, and Other Bets

Roulette

In roulette, you have numerous betting options and equally many opportunities to win.

  • Simple Chances: Simple chances refer to Red and Black. Additionally, you can bet on Low and High: here, you bet on numbers 1–18 (Low) or on 19–36 (High). Even and Odd Even are simple chances as well and are self-explanatory. The chance of winning is almost 50:50. If the ball lands on “0,” you do not lose your bet, but you do not win anything either. If you win, your bet is doubled.
  • Dozen Bets: You can also bet on a dozen, which would be the numbers 1 to 12, 13 to 24, or 25 to 36. In this case, your bet is tripled. The chances of winning for a dozen bet are 32.4%.
  • Column Bets: A column refers to a series of numbers on the tableau. There are the 1–34 column, the 2–35 column, and the 3–36 column. Here too, your bet is tripled. The odds of winning are also 32.4%, similar to the dozen bet.
  • Corner Bet (Carré): In this case, you bet on the four numbers that form a square on the tableau (e.g., 10, 11, 13 & 14). To place this bet, you put your chips at the intersection of these four numbers. If you win a corner bet, you receive 8 times your stake. The chances of winning are 10.8%.
  • Street Bet: In a street bet (also known as a line bet or row bet), you bet on three consecutive numbers, for example, 1, 2 & 3. You place your chips at the outer edge of the first number in the street (be aware of potential local rule variations). The winnings in this case are 11 times your bet. The chances of winning are approximately 8.1%.
  • Split Bet: With a split bet, you place your chips between two numbers on the roulette table, for example, between 8 and 9. If one of the two numbers hits, you receive 17 times your stake. The odds here are 5.4%.
  • Full (Plein) Bet: A full bet means you are specifically betting on a number between 0 and 36. If you win, you receive 35 times your bet. Your chances of winning are about 2.7%.

American and European Roulette: The Differences

Roulette

If you play roulette on American soil, you will encounter some differences compared to the European variant. These differences primarily lie in the structure of the roulette wheel.

While the European roulette wheel has 37 slots (the numbers 1-36 and zero), the American roulette wheel has 38 slots (the numbers 1-36, a single zero, and a double zero “00”).

This affects the so-called “house edge.” This refers to the mathematically calculated advantage that the casino has over the players in the long run—the amount it retains through bets and winnings. The house edge for European roulette is about 2.7%. In contrast, the American variant has a house edge of 5.26% (partly due to the double zero).

The additional double-zero slot also changes all winning rates. Thus, the chance of winning a simple bet (Red/Black, High/Low, etc.) is around 47.37%, compared to 48.68% in the European version.

As described above, certain rules in European roulette mean a bet is not lost if the ball lands on 0. Such rules do not exist in American roulette. If the ball lands on 0 or 00 here, all bets are lost (unless you bet on one of those two slots).
